Jamie is a Cathedral City guitarist who was basically unknown to the live music scene until a few years ago. But you’d never know it when hearing and seeing him play live.
As a teen, the wheels began turning for Jamie when a friend loaned him a copy of Van Halen’s 1978 self-titled debut album. His brother’s guitars suddenly caught his interest, and a couple years later, he bought his own guitar and began playing. Unlike his brother, he didn’t receive formal training. He learned his first song, “More Than a Feeling” by Boston, through magazine tablature.
Years passed, and Jamie had learned note-for-note just about every Van Halen song in the band’s extensive catalogue. His heroes were Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, George Lynch and, of course, Eddie Van Halen. His teachers were Youtube instructional videos. Despite becoming very advanced in his playing, he still didn’t have the confidence to take it to the stage.
Then he spotted an online ad for a band seeking either a guitarist or drummer. It turned out to have been placed by Without Warning drummer, Bob Hughes, who also plays guitar. Bob decided the instrument he’d play in the band would depend on whoever responded to the ad.
When Jamie began to shred, Bob knew the band had found a true talent. Bob took his spot on the drums, and Jamie hasn’t stopped shredding since.
